Giverny - Home of Impressionism

Giverny, near the town of Vernon, was home to Claude Monet, one of the founders of the Impressionist movement, for nearly 43 years. The house, the garden, the village and the countryside nearby were almost exclusively his subject matter during that period. The site has been made so famous by Monet's works that it still attracts more than 500,000 visitors a year. Many painters are attracted to Giverny both because of its links with Monet and the beautiful light of the Seine valley.

In many ways, Claude Monet is simply the latest event in an area that has had a rich history over the last 10,000 years or so.  The area is well known for its archaeological sites dating back to the paleolithic era. The area was also home to the Parisii who founded Paris and from more recent history there are many chateaux and mills.

Giverny is open from 9:30am to 6:00pm from 1st April to 31st October. Advanced reservations cannot be made. Garden visit is €4.00, house and garden is €5.50. Reduced prices for children and students.
